My Coaching Approach
My coaching approach is energizing, insightful, and exploratory. I enjoy helping clients move from feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or uncertain into a place of greater clarity and momentum. Career development can feel isolating, especially for scientists who are trying to navigate competitive fields, changing job markets, or paths that do not look exactly like the traditional academic route. My goal is to make that process feel more manageable, more strategic, and more hopeful.
I bring an exploratory lens to coaching because I know that many scientists are only exposed to a narrow set of possible career paths. Together, we look closely at your experiences, strengths, interests, and values, then consider how those pieces might translate into roles, sectors, and opportunities you may not have fully considered before. I help clients identify the patterns in their career journey, name their transferable skills, and communicate their value clearly in resumes, cover letters, interviews, and networking conversations.
Because my own career has included research, teaching, mentoring, translational science, and leadership, I understand that scientific careers rarely move in a straight line. I want clients to leave our sessions feeling more energized, more self-aware, and better equipped to make decisions about what comes next.
About Me
I was always drawn to science as a kid, but I did not know which path I would take until a single book changed my life: Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton. The idea of using molecular biology and genetic manipulation to bring dinosaurs back to life captured my imagination and sparked my fascination with DNA, genetics, and how living systems work.
That curiosity ultimately led me to earn a PhD in Genetics and Molecular Biology. In graduate school, I was not creating dinosaurs, but I was doing something that felt just as exciting and far more meaningful: creating genetically engineered animal models to study how cancer develops. What began as a fascination with how cells adapt, survive, and change grew into a career as a cancer biologist, faculty member, and a director at a research institution.
Along the way, I discovered that mentoring was one of the most meaningful parts of my work. I found deep satisfaction in helping people move from uncertainty to clarity. Those conversations about goals, setbacks, confidence, and career direction often felt just as important as the research itself.
That experience led me to think more intentionally about the difference between mentoring and coaching. Many scientists receive informal mentorship, but far fewer have access to structured career coaching that helps them reflect on their strengths, explore possibilities, make decisions, and communicate their value with confidence. Recognizing that gap inspired me to pursue coaching as another way to serve the scientific community.
At Success in Science Career Coaching, I bring together my background in cancer biology, teaching, mentoring, scientific leadership, and career exploration to support the next generation of scientists. Whether you are preparing for a transition, clarifying your goals, strengthening your application materials, or figuring out your first steps, I aim to help you approach your career with more energy, insight, and confidence.
When I am not coaching, teaching, or thinking about science, you can usually find me watching movies, co-hosting a film podcast with my nephew, or talking about how storytelling helps us make sense of who we are and where we are going.
