I had quite the windy road on my career journey from high schooler fascinated by animal behavior, to research ecologist, and ultimately as a science communicator and manager of climate and environmental science policy programs. Navigating this path when neither of my parents had college degrees, let alone backgrounds in science, was the ultimate “Do It Yourself” task, and I learned and grew along the way. It was a true “live the journey not just the destination” exercise. I found myself in a remote field camp in the hills of Arizona, staring face-to-face with a barracuda in the Caribbean, and even in the White House Navy Mess having lunch with the President’s Science Advisor!

Through it all, I found mentors, trusted friends, and career coaches to support my personal growth and to aid me in reflecting on what my core values and personal mission were as I deviated from the normal scientific researcher path. I faced loads of setbacks, challenges, and wins. And through it all I gained knowledge and wisdom, as well as empathy for those who have to navigate science education and careers, especially with no legacy family knowledge.

My favorite part of graduate school was mentoring my interns and students. I loved sharing my passion for research and ecology with them, learning about their unique backgrounds, stories, and goals, and discussing my own personal experience to highlight how much of a windy road this journey is. I was inspired by my excellent career coaches in graduate school and during my policy fellowship. They taught me how to systematically review my values, interests, skills, and goals, and to translate them into a professional brand and a set of realistic career pathways. Working through this gave me a clarity and confidence I haven’t had before. I now have a framework and a set of values, even if things don’t go to plan.

I’m so excited to now join forces with Dr. Briggs and Success in Science Career Coaching to support your career growth as a scientist in this turbulent time. I believe that everyone brings their unique persona to the table, and there are often fulfilling opportunities where you least expect them.
